Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the questions that we are asked about our dog shampoos, sprays and wipes. Please excuse us if some of the topics are a little unsavoury, but these are the kind of questions we get asked at shows and other events.

Q. What are the causes of general dog smells ?
Putting aside external contamination from urine, faeces or other stinky stuff, general dog smell is also influenced by diet, gender, genetics, health and medication. We cannot address all those issues, but if your dog is in generally good conditions the typical cause is bacteria (corynebacterium) or some kind of yeast in the coat. This is why the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties of Byotrol are so important to the performance of our products.

  • Bad teeth or gums
  • Ear infections

Q. How often should I wash my dog?
It really depends upon what your dog has been doing or rolling in! We would not recommend washing your dog more than once a week and desist if there is any indication that the skin is becoming inflamed.

Q. My dog rolls in fox poop and other stinky stuff why is that ?
A. There seem to be two schools of thought. Some believe that the dogs are trying to disguise their own scent or it might be that they are trying to communicate to the rest of the pack what quarry is available . Either way, it's a problem!

Q. Why do dogs eat their own or other animals' poop?
Dogs are very efficient scavengers and their digestion system allows them to eat other animal's faeces. Even so this is a food of the last resort and this behaviour might be indication of a vitamin deficiency.

Q. What is wet dog smell?
Wet dog smell is caused by the smell particles attaching themselves to water molecules as they evaporate off the dog's coat. Normally these are trapped under the coat by your dog's skin and you will not notice them.

Q. Does tomato ketchup work on fox poop?
There are some who say it does, although you do have to brush the ketchup out of the coat once it has dried. We would recommend using our Antibacterial Grooming Wipes.

Q. Why can't I use human shampoo?
Human Shampoo may smell nice but it will only cover up the odours for a short period of time, and in some cases can adversely affect your dog in other ways. ByoFresh Dog Shampoo deodorises by killing the bacteria which causes the smell in the first place and has been tested in veterinary supervised trials.

Q. Is Byotrol safe?
We wouldn't recommend drinking Byotrol, but you could! It is totally non-toxic, although it does taste slightly soapy. Your pet will not come to the slightest harm if it licks itself after application.

Q. Can I flush the wipes?
Our wipes are too large to flush down the toilet and should be disposed off with general household waste.

Older cats and longer haired breeds often need a little help with their grooming. The trick here is to make it as stress free as possible and our grooming wipes are the least invasive option.

Q. Why don't you wash chinchillas or degus?
Chinchillas and degus use dust baths to keep themselves clean and do not want liquids matting their very fine coats.
